Vietnamese teenager wins two gold medals at Asian Weightlifting Championships

Although Tung was unsuccessful in his initial two snatch efforts, he managed to score a total of 116-147-263 for all three clean and jerk lifts.

That set a new personal record for Tung, who has won twice as an Asian junior champion and is still young enough to lift in the juniors at 19.

His teammate Ngo Son Dinh was second on 117-143-260 and earned the silver medal of the men’s 55-kilogram event of the 2023 Asian Weightlifting Championships, which is taking place in South Korea’s South Gyeongsang Province from May 5 to 13.

Do Tu Tung, an 18-year-old weightlifter from the northern Vietnamese province of Bac Ninh, has achieved remarkable success both domestically and internationally, winning three gold medals in his first participation in the National Youth and Junior Championships in 2017 and three more gold medals, including a world record, in the Asian Youth Weightlifting Championships in Uzbekistan in 2018.

Tung continued his remarkable streak in 2019 by winning three gold medals and setting three new world records in the men’s under 49 kilogram weight category at the World Youth Weightlifting Championships in the U.S., and earning four more gold, one silver, and one bronze medals and breaking two Asian records at the 2019 Asian Youth & Junior Weightlifting Championships in North Korea. 

After a a two-year break from international tournaments due to COVID-19, Tung made a splendid comeback by winning three gold medals at the 2022 Asian Youth Weightlifting Championships in Bahrain.
