Thousands attend Buddhist festival Quan The Am in Da Nang

Image
The religious ritual is one of the main traditional festivals associated with Ngu Hanh Son (Marble Mountains) and the religious life of local residents. By participating in the festival, pilgrims wish to honour Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, and at the same time prayfor peace and prosperity for the country as a whole. (Photo: VTCnews) The festival comprises various rituals associated with Buddhism, featuring a range of cultural and sporting activities that include an incense-offering ceremony; traditional boat-racing; a praying ceremony; Buddhism indoctrination; and exhibitions of paintings, photos, and calligraphy. Exhibition on Vietnamese revolutionary soldiers and prisoners opens

Image
The exhibition commemorates the 50th anniversary of the liberation of revolutionary soldiers imprisoned by the US-backed regime in the South (1973-2023) and the 48th anniversary of the reunification of Vietnam (April 30, 1975). The thematic exhibition aims to educate Vietnam’s young generation about the sacrifices their ancestors made for the country’s independence, freedom, and peace. Photo courtesy of Hoa Lo Prison Relic According to the organizer, the exhibition tells many moving stories about the revolutionary lives of Vietnamese patriots who were imprisoned and some died in jails across the country during the US war before 1975. The “Moment of Resurrection” exhibition consists of three parts: “The Opening of the Prison Door,” “The Day of the Victorious Return,” and “The Epic Poem Continues. The first part consists of pictures of the prison and penitentiary system built by the U.S. imperialists and the government of the Republic of Vietnam after 1954. Among them,

Vietnam discovers 2,000-year-old stringed instrument

Image
Discovered along the Mekong River in southern Vietnam, the 2,000-year-old instrument resembles a single-stringed harp and may have been an ancestor to the complex musical instruments people still plucked today in Vietnam, according to UK-based science website IFLScience . The artifact consists of a 35-centimeter piece of deer antler with a hole at one end for a peg, which was likely used to tune the string. The antler most likely came from a Sambar deer or an Indian hog deer, two species native to mainland Southeast Asia. While the string seems to have eroded away long ago, the instrument features a bridge that was perhaps used to support the string. Lead researcher and Ph.D. student Fredeliza Campos from the Australian National University said the artifact is at least 2,000 years old — dating back to Vietnam’s pre-Oc Eo culture along the Mekong River, which is exceptionally early for this kind of instrument. VNOB debuts folk painting-based ballet

The ballet is choreographed by Nguyen Ngoc Anh based on Dong Ho folk paintings. It will feature soloists Phan Luong, Thu Hang, Nhu Quynh, and Viet An. Dong Ho paintings with traditional subjects vividly reflect the ancient agricultural society, along with the life and practices of rural Vietnamese people.  The Dong Ho ballet will combine the folk-themed paintings with the melodious sound of the concerto Four Seasons of Vivaldi rearranged by Max Richter. “The ballet is one of the main repertoires this year at VNOB,” said the theatre’s director and the ballet’s art director Phan Manh Duc. “It will vitalise Dong Ho paintings through the performing of ballet dancers on their pointe shoes. We invited London-based choreographer Ngoc Anh for this project aiming at making a unique ballet to combine Vietnamese folk and western classical art genres.” Dong Ho gives choreographer Anh a chance to express his feelings about the art and culture of Dong Ho folk paintings.
