Vietnam trump Singapore, Malaysia in men’s, women’s football at 2023 SEA Games

Two goals of the U22 Vietnamese men’s team were scored by striker Nguyen Van Tung in the 36th minute and Nguyen Thai Son in the 43rd minute, and an own goal was gifted by a Singaporean defender in the 80th minute. 

In the last minute of injury time, the U22 Singaporean team pulled one back thanks to Vietnamese defender Vu Tien Long’s own goal.

With two victories under their belt including the 2-0 win over Laos on April 30, the U22 Vietnamese team currently top Group B in men’s football at the 2023 SEA Games.

On Wednesday afternoon, the Vietnamese women’s football team also earned three points, besting Malaysia 3-0 in the opening match of Group A.

Vietnam’s three goals in the match were all netted in the first half by Pham Hai Yen, Nguyen Thi Bich Thuy, and Huynh Nhu.

After half-time, the Vietnamese women’s team maintained control of the game but failed to score any additional goals.

The win over Malaysia put the women’s team atop Group A.

The Vietnamese men’s and women’s teams, both defending champions, will face Malaysia on Monday and Myanmar on Saturday, respectively.

The 2023 Southeast Asian Games is currently taking place in Cambodia’s Phnom Penh, Siem Reap Province, Preah Sihanouk Province, Kampot Province, and Kep Province until May 17, with the opening ceremony scheduled for Friday.
