Vietnam’s Le Quang Liem ends journey at int’l chess championship after semifinal defeat

The Julius Baer Generation Cup is a tournament in the Champions Chess Tour 2022 with the participation of 16 world-class players.

The prize money is US$150,000 in cash, with the champion receiving $25,000.

Liem finished sixth-placed after 15 games of the group stage to qualify for the quarterfinals, where he beat Hans Niemann of the U.S. to advance to the semifinals.

However, Liem’s stunning run to form at the tourney came to an end as Erigaisi, who is nicknamed the ‘Indian iceman,’ played fantastically to knock out the Vietnamese former world blitz champion in the second semifinal.

The tussle started with a draw before the 19-year-old Indian took the lead in the second.

Erigaisi then missed a big chance in the third to decide the match, ending the game in a draw.

The final regulation game of the match saw Liem get back in it.

The speed specialist went into full attack mode before finishing Erigaisi off in style to level the score at 2-2 and take it to tiebreaks.

Erigaisi then claimed a cool and calm tiebreak win over Liem in both extra games to set the overall victory of 4-2.

The result set up a two-day final starting Sunday between the Indian teen sensation and World Champion Magnus Carlsen, who battled past the determined challenge of German teenager Vincent Keymer in the other semifinal on Saturday morning.

Bidding farewell to the competition, Liem received a prize worth $11,500.
